I converted the songs from my Itunes library into mp3 format and then copied them to the memory card from my phone.

how loud does the radio have to be to get a clear sound or how close

well, it doesn't have to be loud at all in a quiet room. the speakers are fairly good for a cell phone. I had it turned up all the way and it was fairly clear and pretty loud too.
