How to make Ketchup (Catsup) from scratch the old fashioned way. This makes about 30 - 8 oz bottles of ketchup in a 3-4 hour process. It is a sweet ketchup with a pronounced spice flavor to it. Grandpa made this for about 45 years. His mom made it to spice up the B-Grade food they ate in the Depression. Treat this like you would any other canning project. It's a hobby to bring back the old times. Enjoy the process as much as the end result.

  • I don't ever remember grandpa boiling the bottles. Since the ketchup goes in boling hot, maybe that's why he never did. And I've never seen a well-capped bottle go bad within a year. As a matter of fact, I think the shelf life is more like 2-3 years, but it's never been around that long to find out. I'll update here, if I find differently. Thanks for the comment!

  • where did you get that T-shirt grandpa has draped over him .> ? I love ketchup.

  • Wow with the modern "rules" of canning that was kind of scary to watch, but that's how the old-folks did it for years and they lived long lives ... that was known as a 'cold pack' and isn't recommended anymore so keep an eye on your ketchup before using it. @shelovescrapbooking - look in your area for a microbrewery/"brewers store", they will have everything you need for capping bottles there, including directions on treating the bottles after sealing.

  • Where can i buy the bottle caps? Any websites you can recommend me? And where can i get a bottle capper? Can i re-use the bottle caps once i opened them? if so how many times?

  • @patthemonkey Did you mean, "less bitter"? I'm assuming that's what you meant.

  • If you skin and seed before you boil the tomatoes the sauce would be less better and you could reduce the sugar by at least half. Also, I would suggest brown sugar rather than white. Make make my own ketchup and it works for me.

  • Very nice!!! I enjoyed watching it. It also looks so authentic recipe. Thanks for sharing!!

  • This is the first I have seen were almost all the ingredients can come from a garden. I like this method better than many I have seen seems simple and logical... and cheap..
