A grandson of the late Cambodian film maker, Vann Chan, screened on Sunday a trailer for a documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 70s at the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC.
Davy Chou, maker of the new film "Golden Slumbers,'' showed film clips and told the audience about the history of Cambodia's golden age of cinema and of the success of his grandfather's work at Vann Chan Film Production. He spoke about an array of Cambodian screen stars and filmmakers. Davy Chou, whose parents are Cambodian and who grew up in France, hopes to complete the documentary before the end of the year.
Chou says he was shocked when he realized how his grandfather's legacy is being forgotten. Nearly all of the film stars from that era were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Many cinemas become karaoke parlors, hotels or were taken over by squatters. And a lady occupying his grandparent's home said to him and his mother "Oh I saw those films but we threw them away!"

  • I am looking for Phuong Phavy's movie picture. Phuong Phavy played in movie called Meandech Alay in Mrs Vanchan's production. Meandech Alay was produced around 1967 or 1968. If Mr. Chou Davy has any picture for this movie, would you please post it. Vanchan's production contracted Kong Samoeun and Phuong Phavy to play in this movie. Phuong Phavy's family is living in US and they are looking for Phuong Phavy's picture. They lost all her pictures in the Khmer Rouge. thank you

  • It's an excellent idea to preserve our old and classic movies produced in the 1960s and 1970s. Great job, Davy! You're young, but so matured and have courage to do this. You have my full support and respect!

If we want to buy a copy of this so called, "Golden Slumbers", how would we do that? Who should we contact... Please let us know so we all can still have preserve the valuable Khmer movies/cultures. Thanks.
