This is the five-string box fiddle I built. The body is cedar tonewood and the neck is maple, cedar, and walnut. I inlaid a picture of a rooster on the back with various wood veneers. It has a soundpost and bass bar just like a regular fiddle.
The tune is Paddy Won't you Drink Some Good Old Cider. Not my best playing but hopefully it at least shows what the thing sounds like. The low strings are actually louder than they sound, but the camera was picking up on the treble.

  • What are the dimensions of the box? It's been suggested to me to keep the width at a max of 5" to avoid having the bow rub the side of the box, but I'm having a hard time finding a cigar box that smal...at least on eBay. Just beginning my first one. Nice vid BTW and it sounds great.

  • @tutt55

thanks! it's the regular length for a violin, and exactly 5" width (for the same reason you mention)

Maybe try finding a box, then modifying it to make it narrower?

  • Spelling fail.

  • does anyone know the name of this tune please ????

It says in the description of the video, but unfortunately you have to push that little scroll-down button to see it. The tune is Paddy Won't you Drink Some Good Old Cider.
