Watch Phil's "directing" when Victor De Diego takes off on solo. Notice the easy going swing rhythm with the circular motion (not rushed) Mr. Woods uses in the "directing"; that is one of his keys to playing, & what he uses to help construct his solos. Keep the music flowing, make it (floating on air &/or intense) ornate with feeling,& keep the music going round & around in rhythm in the swing, but keep it "well tempered" & balanced like J.S.Bach.I'm sure Phil could explain it better.
