Thousands of teachers have gone on strike in Chicago in a dispute over long-standing issues, including the privatisation of public schools across the US. They say they are being attacked by the policies of both the Democrats and the Republicans. So should US schools be run like businesses? Guests: Joanne Barkan, Robin Rogers, Matthew Chingos.

Divide and conquer: the public sector doesn't stand up for the private sector during the globalisation push that slashes their wages, then the private sector doesn't stand up for the public sector when the public funds are cut to match. Each side knows what's happening when it's done to them, but has amnesia when it's done to the other... once the public unions are broken more, further globalisation will be unleashed, crushing private sector workers. Divided and conquered. It never gets old.

In a sense, they should be run like business. Look at the most prestigious colleges in the republic. They are ran like business and do very well. There is more competition and students get better educations than community colleges. As far as grade school is concerned, I believe schools should be community co-ops. The parents need to have a say in curriculum and should be able to hold teachers and administrators accountable when their students aren't getting a decent education.

When you want to teach people to think, you begin by treating them seriously when they are little, giving them responsibilities, talking to them candidly, providing privacy and solitude for them, and making them readers and thinkers of significant thoughts from the beginning. That’s if you want to teach them to think. -- Bertrand Russel There has to be a better way then the failed public school system or private mind control centers for our children. Parents are key to a child's education.
