You cannot open the door while he is in there i am afraid.
However you can go into the shrine before you go up and see yeesha.
So when you first get into the chamber you can open the door to the shrine and look around.
but when Achenar goes in you will be unable to go in yourself

Don't forget that Sirrus and Achenar had trapped Atrus in the D'ni linking book and can trap you in the Red and Green books in Myst 1

You know . . . I love Achenar to death, but he should use his brain a bit more right here. Every time I play this game it makes me want to bash my brains out on the desk in frustration, because there's a pair of gas masks just down the hall.
