It a pity that the movie doesn't show her trial and imprisonment in "not exactly royal" conditions, and how she was then "paraded" in the streets of Paris in a cage like an ordinary criminal waiting for guillotine to chop her head off (which eventually occurred). On the other hand, maybe that would be too sad for such a sweet film which basically shows her only as a lovely lady playing in a palace.

Is this one of those sad moments when you realise how wrong you are? The truth really hurts doesnt it? I defend marie antoinette, but at the end of the day she did make bad choices in some things and it was her fault sometimes but she was human. Now go and learn a little more about her.....

(cont) but by the time she was able to produce a child it was too late. The enlightenment had begun, and the French revolution was formulating. People were tired of aristocracy and wanted independence. StyleUC is right in stating that although it was wrong that MA place of origin as well as 'rumored behaviors' that spread throughout France was a scapegoat for the elimination of the aristocracy, she did spend a lot of the nations money but at the same time she was a teenager as well.

One thing about Marie Antoinette, and I think this is understandable was that her duty as the Queen was to unite the alliances of Austria and France which could only be done once she produced an heir to the throne. The king refused to have sex with her for a while because he had a 'reproductive' problem that could easily be fixed but was a afraid to fix it for a while, so for a long time she did not have children. Her one escape, (which is implied in the film) was spending money on lavish items.

The palace of Versailles was isolated from the rest of France so Marie Antoinette, from the beginning, did not really have much of a clue as to what the average French citizen was facing. The initiation of the French revolution was a compilation of factors that started YEARS before Marie Antoinette came to the throne such as inability of handling the nations finances properly, the nobility as well as clergy being exempted from taxes, and hunger. These all piled up and eventually led to the FR.

She was married off at a very young age and her education could not have prepared her for what she was thrown into. I defy any 16 year old to be able to handle the politics in a strange country, with an indifferent unsupportive husband (till later on) and people telling horrendous lies about you all the time

"Le peuple n'a plus de pain à manger ? Qu'ils mangent de la brioche !"

This is the true quote of Marie-Antoinette. :)
