I once complimented an acquaintance of mine on having the friendliest smile of anyone I'd ever met. He thanked me and remarked that he had relearned to smile after his father died when he was only seven.  He then went on to tell me about the deaths of his mother (he was still a child), siblings, best friend, and his best friend's wife. Then he pulled out his wallet and asked if I'd like to see a recent photo of his family. I said 'yes,' of course -- I was curious to see who was left.
