My Darling Clementine (1946)

Directed by John Ford
Staring Henry Fonda

My Darling Clementine is Ford's version of the legend of Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) and his brothers battling the Clanton gang. And it's classic John Ford. Who else could mix a movie about violence, addiction and revenge, with romance and nostalgia?

I spliced together my two favourite sequences in the movie (which are normally separated by two brief scenes). They are not necessarily going to grab hold of you, nor are they going to teach you any great moral lessons. They are merely lovely human moments.

  • I guess if you have to explain it, there's no point.

  • To frankycubs (and any other non-western lover) --

The Greeks have their gods. The Italians theirs. And most other early civilizations their own. We Americans have the wild west. And John Ford is literally creating myth and the visual language for conveying that mythos out of thin air.

It's pure magic. The sky - the diagonal lines along the front of the baber shop.

And further more, our Gods were not untouchable figures, but regular folks who liked to dance. Imagine that.

And that's no knock on Jack Palance. But he was still having his face reconstructed when this movie was made.

He got some other good gigs.

Not disagreeing. But maybe our verboseness (it's not elequence after drinking) deserves a rest until Walter Brennan serves prairie coffee in the morning.

  • @custardflan

Yup. No need to explain it to me. It sounds like you may have been trying to explain it to others who will never understand.

But I gotta go. There was another dance in THE GRAPES OF WRATH that the "cops" broke up. I think it might start again.

  • @MRJAMES56 The song is Shall we gather at the river

  • Anyone wanna write a 1500 word essay on this for me? Some of you seem pretty enthusiastic about it.

  • @thecoolandcrazyone The song is "The Blue Blue Waltz" same song as in Young Mr. Lincoln

  • Best scene ever. Nothing gets as romantic as this.

  • I have always enjoyed this movie. There is a quiet strength to it. and Cathy Downs is perfect in her role (she is dancing with Fonda). She was being groomed for star-hood by 20th Century Fox in this movie, but they suddenly dropped her after its release. Rumor was because Cathy refused to sleep with studio boss Darryl Zanuck.

Jack Palance? Haha! Sorry but I just can't envision anyone but Henry Fonda in this role.

  • This Music gets in your ears and you keep hearing it for awhile, I love it and the dance from two good actors.
