I agree that Nam Myoho Renge Kyo causes confusion in this context. But this confusion is not nessessary.
It means faith and devotion in the Mystic Law of Cause and Effect through sound/voice. Nichiren claims over and over and over that the Lotus Sutra is the highest teaching and all the other sutras were provisional teachings intended only to lead peoples understanding to eventually grasp the Lotus Sutra. This is NOT consistant with Tibetan Belief.

Read the Lotus Sutra, read the words of Nichiren Daishonin, there is major conflict here.
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is not the Buddhism of the Dali Lama.

Was the chant performed while he was there, or is the chant an overlay audio???

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, means Honor to the Lotus Sutra....the lotus sutra is well respected in Tibetan Buddhism....
OM MANI PADME HUM

Tina's Chanting was taken from a Larry King Live Interview!

There is no conflict. The conflict is in the belief that there is one right way. Both forms of Buddhism have compassion as the desired outcome of their practice. If anyone decries a form of practice different from their own perception, that is where the conflict arises. In the mind. But only in the mind.
True great spirituality accepts all great forms for interpretation. His Holiness The Dalai Lama is a great inspiration for the world. So is the legendary singer Tina Turner. They both represent Buddhism - different aspects of it:-) The Dalai Lama is a peacemaker a wonderful human being and a great prophet. All religions are equal. This is even the same religion, just different interpretations.
