Hugh Jackman's character Angier never had 20 doubles...Angier found one guy that looked like him and, well not to spoil one of the best movies ever, but Angier doesn't have 20 other guys that look like him...

I think you'll find he DOES have other clones, he killed them though, each night he performed it, the clone dropped into the water tank and drowned. That's why at the end of the movie, you see the room with all of the tanks full of his dead clones

When they first show the version with Christian Bale, it's so much cooler and understated (the point between the two characters and how they go about their business can definitely be represented in how they do this trick).
