Hey, Google Maps for Mobile is great, but it is annyoing that you need an internet connection to load the maps. Why doesnt Google provide the maps for offline installation on the handset? So one could download the map for the desired country. It would safe time and money.

The way google maps works is by images abit like a super high ress photo. googles servers do the wok of streaming the images to the phone hence even simple java phones can render them. thats why gmaps is so fast and clear.

To store and use that big of an image locally you would need not only need hell of alot of Gigs but also a beast of a phone.

Ovi maps is stored locally, with alot less detail than google maps and it is slow as hell.

I'm sure the file size for that would be HUGE -- probably way past many phones' internal/external memory capacity.
