Should get the vanos rebuilt. For a few hundred. Or u can by a rebuilt on for 1600 onlin. Their is a place in Texas an they will rebuild your old on or sell u a rebuilt one.

my late 01 m5 sounds like that. try putting proper castrol 10w60 m oil it made mine a bit quieter.

The dealer told me that it is perfectly fine and normal and to worry if it stops making that noise! HA hA

Sounds just like mine too (Production date 11/2000) Are you running 5-30 weight oil?

Later M5 lumps had different piston rings and extra oil lift pumps to feed the head.

You have to find a 2002 model if you want one without the diesel/vonos sound..
Some say BMW changed it in 2000.. But im pretty sour that they first started rebuilding them in late 2001
