My friend Susan Johnson took me to a wonderful Chorinho concert... right in the middle of a food market. Later she and I made rice with squid, which is a cheap and cheerful Brazilian recipe.

  • Most likely the taste for Palm Oil was brought by the African slaves brought to Brazil. Many slaves were employed as kitchen helpers and would have eventually been able to influence the menu being presented. The Portuguese were experienced 'colonisers' and would have had an open mind to rare or strange products. So I can totally see the big farmers going... "Wow, this Palm Oil thing is delicious. Let's import the palms and grow them here!" (in a 1600s Portuguese accent of course).
