Our editor-in-chief (DWR) believes the latest tracking data indicates that the ship drifted out of control after striking the rocks off the Isola del Giglio, without any propulsion or steering used over the next 70 minutes. He thinks the ship was eventually turned around by a northerly current, drifted back at less than walking speed and beached itself without guidance at any stage by the ship's crew. It was just good luck that the ship did not sink in deep water.
This is in contrast to Capt Schettino's lawyer who said that lives had been saved thanks to the manoeuvre he made after the ship hit rocks. What do you think? Study the data below and please add your own views here...

Our deepest sympathy goes out to all parties involved with this tragedy. Costa Concordia was the flagship of the Costa Cruises fleet, entering service in 2006, and ending service on Friday 13th January 2012 after hitting rocks off the Isola del Giglio. There were a total of 4,229 people on board. 12 days after the crash the confirmed death toll has reached 16 and emergency crews are searching for another 16 still missing. http://www.cleancruising.com.au/ship.asp?ship=COSCON

I wonder when they will eventually find out what went so wrong. The watertight doors didnt bother working until too much water had filled it up, the co-captain or any of the staff didnt bother calling the emergency services themselves when the ship had first crashed and they are all coming out with co-inciding stories about the captain! And a few poor people died, yet the company is only really interested in profits and pushing this aside.
