Because of widely differing domestic furniture fire safety standards between the UK and most continental countries (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Benelux), since 1988, domestic sofa seats available in continental Europe let 3 to 5 mn escape time in case of fire, whereas domestic sofa seats available in the UK let you up to 15-20 minutes escape time. A mandatory standard is needed.

Comparative burning test between two IKEA EKTORP sofas meeting the (absence of) standard from continental Europe and the british fire safety standard applicable to domestic furniture. Test performed in a laboratory by Efectis Nederland in November 2010.
