While I'm all for seat belts, this federal government video is just creepy. The police display a frightening lack of respect for individual rights, dignity, and sovereignity. Note the random stops, too. Video is in the public domain.

  • Great video. Seat belts save lives. All law enforcement Officers and paramedics would rather respond to a personal injury accident to find it's occupants alive with only minor,if any, injuries, rather than a fatality. This is because of the use of their seat belts usually saves their life!!! All the conspiracy B.S. comments don't mean anything and come from uneducated and clueless individuals. Relax, be miserable and keep your dumb opinions to yourself. You only sound stupid in your text.

  • Seat belts DO save lives and I'm all for people wearing them. That said, no government has a right to compel you to wear your seat belt. This is akin to the government ticketing you for not eating enough fiber or for ordering french fries with your meal. Wearing seat belts and eating healthy foods are both important, but they are not appropriate venues for government intervention.

  • That actually seemed pretty innocuous to me. It is about social engineering, but the objective is to get people to wear seatbelts, which is a worthwhile endeavor.

  • Social engineering at gunpoint is tyranny. If people will not wear seat belts, let Nature punish them.

  • This is not "at gunpoint" dude. The conflict arises from whether or not you think the government has the right to force you to be as safe as possible or not. Its just like debates over motorcycle and bicycle helmet laws. You're being overdramatic if you think this is an example of tyranny.

Now, if you had paired such rhetoric with a clip of Rodney Kind getting beating to shreds I might see your point.

  • Police can only do these things because of the implied threat of physical violence. The Rodney King tape shows that this threat is an option of first resort for some police officers. How many people would pull over and stop for a police officer if the worst that could happen was the cop following them around and whining?

Without the threat of force, up to and including lethal force, governments cannot compel, they can only cajole, teach, and implore.

  • They don't know why seatbelt use dropped in 2005? It is called backlash.

  • America is molding into the biggest police state in the world! Americans think they are so free, but THEY ARE NOT! Any society that sets up interior police checkpoints to make sure that you are "wearing your seatbelt" is far from a free society and it's only going to get worse in the next 15-20 years. Interior police checkpoints will be everywhere and everyday in interior USA within in the next 10-15 years. How sad.

  • My main problem here is that the Federal Government has no authority to regulate driving laws. We either need a Constitutional amendment or allow the states to regulate rules like these. That said, I'm not against seat belt laws. Unlike a motorcycle, you often maintain the ability to control the vehicle to some degree if you're in an accident. If you're not wearing a belt you could lose that ability. These laws only apply to public roads too.

  • where in the constitution does it give u this right? just curious because i know nowhere or havent heard of such rights. if this right was to exist then, going by ur logic, you have the right to smoke crack, they arent hurting anyone else but themselves right? wrong.. it effects anyone from the people who witness it to your family who suffer through the loss of their loved one. im all for seatbelts but my point it there is no where in the constitution that give u such rights

  • oh ill click it. click clack pow officer down

  • I'm all for wearing seat belts. everyone in my car wears a seat belt. The law is completely unconstitutional. It is your right to not wear a seat belt. Not smart, but it is your right. You are not hurting anyone, but yourself. If you have little kids in the car that is a different story.

This is all just an extra level of control. Just another reason to be able to set up more road blocks.

Please be safe, wear a seat belt. But fight unconstitutional legislation like this law whenever you can.

  • We know the formula, more tickets means more revenue for the state. By the way if everyone obeyed the law these cops would not have a job.

  • you have a cool name dude

  • i'll wear a seat belt when i wanna.

  • Ironically, in Kentucky, they force citizens to use seat belts by invoking the police powers of the state, but they don't have a law requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets. Government forcing citizens to obey draconian laws that invade the privacy of the vehicle and divest the individual's rights regarding his own health/safety choices is tyrannical. They should be chasing thieves, murderers and corrupt government officials rather than coercing citizens to give up their health choice rights
