Billy Stewart (March 24, 1937 -- January 17, 1970)
While Stewart continued to record throughout the remainder of the 1960s on Chess without major success, his weight problem worsened and he developed diabetes. He suffered minor injuries in a motorcycle accident in 1969 and died the following January, just two months prior to his 33rd birthday. It happened when the car he was driving plunged into the Neuse River in Smithfield, North Carolina, killing him and three members of his band.

  • What a great version. No disrespect to Ella or Janis but this one always puts a smile on my face. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...uck Chuck a-chuck-chuck huh! yeah!

  • Billy did an extended live version of this at the old Nixon theater in West Philly with reverb and echo on his voice that was out of sight. I've only heard it a couple of times but I wish I could find it.Thanks for posting this. Damn he could sing!

  • OMG!!! l LOVE HIM!!!!

  • If I couldn't see in concert, well this is as good as it gets!!!!!!!

  • I saw Billy Stewart at the "Purple Penquin" in Charlotte N. C. late in 1969 or early January 1970. Anyway it was right before his untimely death. I don't think that most people realize that Billy was one of the greatest dancers and showmen on stage of all the beach music performers. Billy, although over weight, could still do turns and twists. He was very agile on his feet and quite frankly one of the most under-rated entertainers of the 60's.Billy had a tremendous vocal range & a great dancer.

  • yeah, billy stewart was an early icon in black music when i was kid...the 70's disco group "GQ" did a good cover of "i do love you".

  • Far out the best version of Ghershwin's summertime - the most covered song ever ! Such a shame he died so young.

  • HELL YEAH! LOVE THIS SONG THE WAY HE DID IT!

  • LIKE..........

  • awesome version - jazzy - with the sax and horn solos - too bad it was done in a cheezy country theme dance show - but the audio is fantastic ! loved it.....

  • Nice alto sax solo. I like the hat!
