Want the secret to stop shorting your diodes? They're expensive aren't they? Slow the current surges caused each time you have a discharge at the output terminal. Put 33 ohm 5 watt resister in series with EVERY capacitor and diode. You will have two resistors between every cap. In the middle of these resistors is where you tie the stack of diodes. If you have everything sized correctly, your Cockcroft-Walton multiplier will be indestructible. It is a lot more fun than boring Corvette.

@joesitter20101 There is a water resistor at the discharge end... I think they are getting over volted...
