You can die during the mission. You CANT die after you come outside and the chase starts, and than you have 2 min 30 sec to do it. Up vote so people aren't confused.

Nope you can't restart from check point. You gotta do the whole mission again.

I'd just died after 10 seconds and was ready to kill people for real, but next go I solved it!: Don't go near that white van! Stick to the right side all the way. You'll see one of the bad guys disappear into the wall - stand there and shoot the police near the bus. Then squeeze past the bus, keeping right (1 policeman then shot me from behind - kill him). Use grenades past the bus.

Don't try and run and jump method as dude below stated. He must have gotten lucky. To much auto aim on the CP's to make it. I'd say fight and push up until the van shows up in the middle of the street. Then book it to the cut scene.

@P1or You are correct. Can't die and can't restart from checkpoint after you go outside. I found the easiest and fastest way is to hit the run button and jump the entire time. I got killed several times and had to restart the mission all over again, which really sucks balls.. For some reason, they won't kill you if you keep jumping. Run to the left side of the street like he did in the video, then to the right of the van like he did and just keep fucking jumping..
