This is Ted Kennedy's presidential concession speech to Jimmy Carter in 1980 on the floor of the Democratic Convention. It is widely recognized as the last of the famous Camelot speeches by the Kennedy's.

  • Good man, great speech, bad time for him to run. 1988 would have worked better (Kennedy/Gore perhaps, I know Al was young but he ran a decent canpaign himself in '88)....oh well.

  • It going to take more then stroke to stop the lion Senator Ted Kennedy. Get well soon Mr. Senator. you may be out but we wont let the necon stop your dream. Your dream shall never die!

  • Check ur math...more like 30 years later. And so much of it is relevant, health care, environment, etc.

  • 1980 was an unusual primary. Ted Kennedy launched a campaign against incumbent President Jimmy Carter. By the time of the Convention, it was clear that Carter had enough delegates to clinch the nomination, and Kennedy did not. But Kennedy continued his campaign in the hopes of passing a rule to free delagates from being bound by primary results. This effort failed the first night of the Convention, and Teddy withdrew the next night, and gave this legendary speech. RIP Ted, thanks for everything.

  • I mean 29 years later,

  • I would like to thank matthewmesher for posting this excellent speech, but I would like to point out that the information box is inaccurate. Presidential concession speeches are done by the actual candidates themselves, i.e. it would be Jimmy Carter. Concessions are never made during party conventions as this is the time when the primary-winning candidates are chosen to represent parties before the general election.

It is amazing that all the issues discussed are still relevant 19 years later!

  • G-d Bless Senator Edward M. Kennedy and The United States of America

  • well said

  • Or perhaps a Kennedy/Hart ticket. All that idealism wrapped in one package would have been overwhelming.

  • I agree, 1984 was tough. There wasn't ever any real excitment around Mondale. A Kennedy/Glenn ticket just might have....just maybe...put a scare into the reagan machine.

  • 1984 could have worked as well with a decent running mate.He would have done better than Mondale that's for sure.

  • this is just like 2008....they used the same tricks every time....
