i saw this on antiques roadshow back in 2004. ive been looking for the video ever since. there are a few smiths still making iron articulating crabs and other animals today but nowhere near this level of mastery. Imagine a smith making a suit of armor that perfectly fits your body but doesnt restrain or constrict your movement while it provides protection. godlike skills. enjoy the video
I would think out of the forge they would have used fine hammers and tools to make the spikes. The amount of precision needed for that articulation, that small, could not have been cast.
