Thousands of volunteers from nations around the world signed up to help the Spanish Republican cause in the civil war and fight Franco. They were known as the International Brigades. Sam Lesser was one of the first British volunteers to sign up. Here's his story in his own words.

I have enormous respect for these people who left everything to defend a country they did not know. The tragedy is the Republicans would have won if they had had unity on their own side, even with the opposition of the Germans and Italians.
