Cameron Crowe is probably my favourite contemporary filmmaker. I enjoy the characters and worlds he creates, and the spirit in which he tells his stories. The brilliance of Crowe's films is that they often start where other's finish -- his stories often tell the challenges experienced in the rest of the story: what happens when the boy realizes his dream and gets the girl (Say Anything), what happens when the boy realizes his dream and gets hired to write for a major national publication (Almost Famous), and what happens when a sports agent realizes that he should have less clients and less money and then gets exactly that (Jerry Maguire).

At the beginning of the film Jerry Maguire comes to the realization that he hates his place in the world. He's inspired to turn his occupation into a vocation so he stays up all night and types out a "mission statement" that he intends to distribute at the sports agent conference he's attending.

It's a huge risk to share his heart with his colleagues and he knows it, but he receives some unexpected encouragement from the late night print shop copier (played by Alice in Chain's Jerry Cantrell).
