The Fed just dropped the fed funds rate by 75 basis points -- the largest such move since 1984. No matter what the issues were yesterday, it is clear that the economy -- domestic and global -- is what will be the biggest political issue today and tomorrow... at least for a while. So for this New America event, our Economic Growth Program and Next Social Contract Initiative brought together economic policy advisors to the various political campaigns.

Steven Clemons, Director of the American Strategy Program at New America, moderated the discussion and subsequent Q&A, which explored the challenges facing the U.S. economy and the wide range of responses being floated by the leading presidential hopefuls.

  • omg this is the worst video i eva watched

  • If you guys think things are bad now, you haven't been around. I was in rural China in January--imagine riding bikes to get your groceries because you can't afford a car. For entertainment, people played chess or pingpong; they don't have PS3s and Wiis. And starbucks is about 50 YUAN for a cup of coffee, when the average monthly salary is 600 YUAN or less. China as the new economic darling of the world, isn't as spectacular as everybody makes it out to be. If the USA falls, so does China.

  • An idea is announcing that one is "creating millions of jobs"? As long as we focus on inputs (jobs) rather than outputs (how we want the world to be) we will get nowhere. "Job creation" is usually some variant of dividing the labor force in half, with one half digging holes and the other filling them. This can go on ad naseum, "creating" an infinite number of jobs. Of course "output" or the state of the world stays unchanged, only we are more tired than before.

  • I would have voted for HIllary until her and her husband starting lying and playing dirty politics with Obama and Edwards

  • I'm voting for Hillary because I believe she's the candidate that has the best ideas for jumpstarting the economy. Putting an immediate freeze on foreclosures and mortgages. Cutting taxes for the middle class. And creating millions of new jobs. With the economy in crisis, we need a president with the ideas, the solutions that get America working for all of us. That's why I'm voting for Hillary Clinton.
