  • Good review "Fables" is my personal favourite of all R.E.M.s albums (although at the time of release in the British press Michael Stipe insisted the album was called "Reconstruction of the fables", which kind of puts a different slant on the record).I agree it is a dark record but its strength is that there isnt a bum track,I can still play this album start to finish 25 years after purchase.Keep up the reviews .Hats off to you Sir

  • @skl31 Thanks very much! I'm glad you liked the review.

  • Good review. I tend to agree with you on many of your points, with a couple exceptions. I think the feeling of the album from beginning to end is actually really good..it does work as a coherent, cohesive album. And as for the Southern twang in Wendell Gee (and Rockville, as you mentioned), they are a Southern band, and this is Southern subject matter (Reconstruction being after the Civil War), so it's bound to have that feel at some point.

    Good review, nonetheless.

  • You make excellent points referring to their Southern origins, I can't deny that, but I just can't say that I like that side of REM when it's that blatant. I've never really been a fan of that style of music. But thanks for the awesome comment!!

  • there best album in my opinion.

  • This has gotta be their most underrated album. Beautiful and more dissonant than their other releases.

  • moody, murky and brilliant. transports you to the south.

power and grit of auctioneer, kensey and gravitys pull coupled with blissful vocals on rushes and good advices makes this album a true accomplishment.

  • Sorry about the double post

  • Wendell Gee is my second favourite from the album, behind Can't Get There From Here. The two songs that I don't care for are Od Man Kensey and Good Advices, simply because they all seem to be based around one single note. Overall, a very good album but not their best in my opinion.

  • Kohoutek was always my favorite. So murky and great.

  • This one and Document are R.E.M's 2 best I.R.S.--era albums, IMHO. The only Fables song I don't care for is Auctioneer (Another Engine).

  • I'm with you on Green Grow the Rushes, definitely my favorite song on the album

  • Can you rate a song that I will submit to you?

  • My fave is Auctioneer

  • @skl31

I agree. This is not only my favorite REM album but probably my all time favorite album by anyone. I also love Murmur. To the guy who did the review, have you heard the Love Tractor album Themes from Venus? Mitch Easter produced it and I think it's an incredible album but not a lot of folks are familiar with it. Not like REM but you still might dig it.
