Thomas and Patrick Demenga: "Redshift" by Barry Guy
Redshift happens when a partical of light (photon) tries to escape from a gravitational field losing energy in the process. Since photons always travel at the speed of light, the only place where this energy loss can show up is in a change of frequency. The frequency of the photon decreases to longer wave lengths this is the "red shift". A simple resumé of a term in a hugely complex and awe inspiring subject.
What works for light waves also works for sound waves. It is the idea of gravitation towards similar material and minute frequency changes that lies behind this piece for two cellos. In the act of playing unison material, colouration of the pitch and characteristics of the instruments reveal themselves. Slight shifts in pitch and texture have an almost destabilizing effect on the listeneer which in turn activates an even more intense concentration.
The piece is meditative in character although there are moments of intense activity like giant outbursts of x-rays emanating from a black hole way out in space.

Thomas Demenga - Cellist and Composer
Thomas Demenga, born 1954 in Berne, Switzerland, studied with Walter Grimmer, Antonio Janigro, Leonard Rose and Mstislav Rostropovich, among others. Important chamber-musical influences were Claus Adam, Felix Galimir and Robert Mann at the Juilliard School in New York.

In the Lucerne Festival in summer 2003, Thomas Demenga participated as «artiste étoile», succeeding Sabine Meyer (2000), Anne-Sophie Mutter (2001) and Alfred Brendel (2002), Thomas Quasthoff (2004), Christian Tetzlaff (2005) and Emanuel Pahud (2006).
Thomas Demengas work is documented impressively on a number of CD recordings on the ECM New Series label. In 2002 ECM issued the final volume of a widely-acclaimed series begun in the mid-80s whicgh combined Bachs solo suites with works by modern composers such as Holliger, Carter, Veress, Zimmermann, Yun and Hosokawa. His latest CD "Chongur" with Thomas Larcher and accordianist Teodoro Anzellotti has been awarded with the "Deutsche Schallplattenpreis", "Fono Forum: Star of the Months", "Grammaphone: Editors Choice" and "Le monde de la musique: le choc du mois" (ECM 1914).
