Then, for more than an hour leading up to the actual event, the men gather on the temple's main platform that features perilously steep steps. They push and jockey for position. Fights break out, people fall down, and periodically a rescue team is called in to remove and injured person. A voice over the loud speaker announces the successful rescue and the participants pause to applaud their efforts.
