The only time it will cost you more is if you're buying one with poor hardware to begin with. Sure, you can go to best buy and get a $700 PC comprised of pan scrapings, or you can build a custom PC for $900 and it'll have three times as much hardware. When you get down to equal specs, there's no comparison. I can get below that $700 mark easily. It all depends on what's going in it.

@MaestroDraven Who builds custom Mac's? If you know enough to build a custom computer, than you know enough to work a PC. I was talking about building custom PC's. Building your own will cost you more than buying one at a store, unless you find one crappy store.

To duplicate the power of my mid-range rendering station, which cost me $1500, I would need to have built a customized iMac with a $4000 price tag......so.......yes, it is cheaper. By bucketloads.

It's the classic myth, my friend. A PC will do everything a Mac can do with faster, more powerful potential. A Mac however, cannot do everything a PC can do.  Software is just one instance. I could list several others.

Not with those hardware configurations, it won't. By default, every Mac is already obsolete, even if you ran out and bought one right now.
