Grab Des Lanis

Jener Lanis, den du liebtest, Markus, ist nicht hier
im Grab, wohin du kommst und weinst und stundenlang verweilst.
Jener Lanis, den du liebtest, ist dir näher dort
in deinem Haus, wenn du dich einschließt und das Bild betrachtest,
das irgendwie bewahrte, was an ihm wert war,
das irgendwie bewahrte, was du geliebt.
Erinnerst du dich, Markus, wie du vom Palais des Prokonsuls
den Kyrenäer brachtest, den berühmten Maler,
und mit wie kunstvoller Berechnung er,
sobald er deinen Freund erblickte, euch bereden wollte,
dass er ihn um jeden Preis als Hyazinth gestalten müsse
(in dieser Pose würde sein Bild viel mehr Beachtung finden).
Doch seine Schönheit lieh dein Lanis solcherart nicht her;
und unbeirrt sich widersetzend sagte er, dass er beileibe nicht
Hyazinth verkörpern wolle, noch irgendjemand andren sonst,
sondern sich, Lanis, Sohn Rametichos', aus Alexandria.


Λάνη Tάφος

Ο Λάνης που αγάπησες εδώ δεν είναι, Μάρκε,
στον τάφο που έρχεσαι και κλαις, και μένεις ώρες κι ώρες.
Τον Λάνη που αγάπησες τον έχεις πιο κοντά σου
στο σπίτι σου όταν κλείεσαι και βλέπεις την εικόνα,
που αυτή κάπως διατήρησεν ό,τ' είχε που ν' αξίζει,
που αυτή κάπως διατήρησεν ό,τ' είχες αγαπήσει.

Θυμάσαι, Μάρκε, που έφερες από του ανθυπάτου
το μέγαρον τον Κυρηναίο περίφημο ζωγράφο,
και με τι καλλιτεχνικήν εκείνος πανουργία
μόλις είδε τον φίλο σου κ' ήθελε να σας πείσει
που ως Υάκινθον εξ άπαντος έπρεπε να τον κάμει
(μ' αυτόν τον τρόπο πιο πολύ θ' ακούονταν η εικών του).

Μα ο Λάνης σου δεν δάνειζε την εμορφιά του έτσι·
και σταθερά εναντιωθείς είπε να παρουσιάσει
όχι διόλου τον Υάκινθον, όχι κανέναν άλλον,
αλλά τον Λάνη, υιό του Pαμετίχου, Aλεξανδρέα.

Tomb of Lanis

The Lanis you loved, Markos, isn't here
in this tomb you come to weep by, lingering hours on end.
The Lanis you loved you've still got close to you
in your room at home when you look at his portrait-
the portrait that still keeps something of what was valuable in him,
something of what you used to love.

Remember, Markos, that time you brought in
the famous Kyrenian painter from the Proconsul's palace?
What artistic subtlety he used trying to persuade you both,
the minute he saw your friend,
that he absolutely must do him as Hyacinth-
in that way his portrait would come to be better known.

But your Lanis didn't hire out his beauty like that;
reacting strongly, he told him to paint
neither Hyacinth nor anyone else,
but Lanis, son of Rametichos, an Alexandrian.
