I stepped over a 4 ft "stick" on a path here in FL, and then realized it was a snake. Even had kinks like a stick. Poked it with my walking stick - nothing, but not seem dead. Kept on, and it finally moved away. Even tho I knew it wasn't a rattler, very unnerving when I heard "rattling" as it went away. Apparently, was a rat snake, and they pretend to be dead and rustle dead leaves as defense. Glad I poked it. I bike woulda killed it.
