In part 2 of 7, Andrew Klein (www.andrewklein.net) edits the color of the base template for better visibilty, then uses the create polygon tool to make the first contour of the form. By extruding edges and then creating a duplicate instance, the first row of faces along the centerline of the model is created.

  • Andrew, im kind of new to 3d modeling in maya but ive tried a couple of different ways of getting my 3d models through the blocking stage. I was first taught using a method im sure youve heard of, box modeling, i was hoping you could explain the advantages of modeling using this method ,rather than working from a simple cube and working it into an object. Thank you.

  • This method, also known as edge extrusion modeling is an alternate way of beginning that I think is better suited towards the individual who thinks in contour and cross-contour lines for additive sculpture rather than subtractive. Having a template in place as well, allows you to trace off of a pre-defined 3d space. I have 2 different "modeling a head" video series here on youtube, 1 in each method. Check them out side by side and see what works for you.

  • I cant find my create polygon tool...I dont even have a Mesh Shelf where else can i find it?

  • wow, im late to reply here, but to find the Mesh Menu (not shelf, they are different things) you must be in the Polygon's Menu set (the drop-down in the upper left corner)

  • How do i use different surface colors for the NURB template and for the polygons? i tried like you told, but it changes the color of all objects, thats really disturbing..
