This is my 1937 JD "B", startup and walkaround. This tractor sat for about three weeks before I started it in the video.

  • my dad has two A's that look like this one and the one A starts up with vary little trouble but the other one is a pain in the but we have to pull if with the truck and that is the only way it will start we re did the carb and a hotter mog and hotter A C plugs it runs good has lots of power but it has to be pulled to get it to start

  • @daveantd1971 Does the magneto click when you try to start it? If it's not clicking, it's not going to fire at slow speeds.

  • gah, i wish our B started that easily, ours is even restored nicely, and is is a pain in the ass to start, :p

  • The secrets to an easy starting tractor are a hot magneto and a clean carburetor, especially the carb. Make sure ALL the passages in the carb are clear and free of rust...a shot of carb cleaner and a kit isn't going to cut it. You'll need an extra long drill bit to get the passages clear. As for the mag, make sure it is "clicking" when you turn it over by hand or it'll never give a good spark at the low starting speeds. A hot coil cannot hurt anything, either.

  • My father traced the successive owners on my great grandfather's 1936 B and bought it back for my grandfather's 80th birthday. It was quite a sight to see my grandfather's face when he realized it was the tractor he used as a kid on the trailer, as shown by a hoop that had been placed on the front of the tractor for pulling wagons backward. I was wondering where you went to have the serial number researched?

  • Serial Number Researches are available from the Two-Cylinder Club's website. Mine showed build date (11/13/36), ship date (11/14/36), destination (Kansas City Branch House) and options including wheel equipment (skeleton).

Two-Cylinder makes a very interesting and informative publication, and if you're not already a member I can't recommend it enough.

  • put put put put put put put

  • @dmeyer302 i cheched the mag and it would click than not click dad did do something to it and that did help a lot it will now start off the flywheel if you throw a liitele eather down the intake.

  • I have an A and it was a bitch to start. Thank god it had electric start. Biggest things to getting it working good was cleaning up the carb. The bushings wear out for the throttle plate and the thing will suck air really bad. Cleaning everything up and fix ALL leaks. I had the mag rebuilt and it starts and runs really good. I love making it work, that thing sounds awesome when there is a workload on it. Now how do I get live power? LOL That would be cool. Mowing with no live power sucks.

  • Gawd! I need to get me an old 'B' one of these days.

  • nice old putt putt tractor you got there!

    plus i love row crops!

  • nice to see an old survivor still runnin.....looks like it ain't had many problems.

  • @johndeerejon it wont backfire if its warmed up you could get it rebuilt and it shouldnt backfire

  • @pmdwashere make sure it has gas in it first sounds like something needs to be agusted or you might need to cleand the sark plug wires sometimes the get dirty and a tractor wont spark
