I love how old trailers make masterpieces look stupid.

Why? I think the newer version of the film, based on the book by a Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, is exploring different aspects of the book. The stillness of the camera, the atmosphere of the film, focus on the most important parts of the book, haunting score by Cliff Martinez make it a masterpiece. You can't really compare those two films. They interpret the book a bit differently.

With no doubt a sci-fi classic, it had influence on many other flix of the genre. The 2002 remake is also good, though different it is. If you enjoyed Kubrick's '2001' or the more recent 'Event Horizon', for instance, you will probably like quite a lot this old movie. A little known gem which definitely defined the genre.

"As Solaris' author I shall allow myself to repeat that I only wanted to create a vision of a human encounter with something that certainly exists, in a mighty manner perhaps, but cannot be reduced to human concepts, ideas or images. This is why the book was entitled Solaris and not Love in Outer Space."

In the case of Solaris, as much as I can understand Lem's feelings, I also feel that Tarkovsky's spin on it had a lot more resonance with me than the novel itself (and this isn't being pseudo-intellectual - that word is used unfairly quite often).

True and I welcome some respite from the shallow Michael Bay trash that has flooded the world.

Tarkovsky's films also provide contrast to what we're used to in film. His Solaris would not have worked as well as it did without staying on Earth for forty minutes, for one. Also, Tarkovsky wasn't really trying to pace his films according to his audience - you ever seen Battleship Potemkin?
