This song was originally written by Jerry Chesnut, but it's most well known for the cover by Elvis Costello.

  • Oddly enough, the Counting Crows versions pulls on the way Jerry Chesnut sang it himself. It takes it strenght from almost 'telling it' instead of singing full out.

I grew up with the Costello version, and that will always be the one I come back to... for the melodic beauty of it.

This version let's you feel the lyrics more actually, very nicely done.

  • OH no!!! I grew up with the elvis costello version and this just doesnt compare !!

  • @Punktowner My ex wife said the same thing. Funny. I left her and got full custody of all three sons. (What's that say about folks who don't like Adam's voice?) LOL Just messin' with ya'. But it's true. That's something you have in common with my ex. If you're ever near Monroe, NY, where she lives, maybe you oughta' look her up?

  • God is his voice annoying...give me the Elvis Costello version any day.

  • Get the audio from this clip at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • Elvis Costello had a hit with aswell

  • @weepandmoan I'll eat my hat but must marinate it first in my tears. I'll use it as filling for my humble pie.

  • @RasMajnouni

Sorry, Ras, Jerry wrote this song for George Jones, who had a big hit with it.

  • Even a non American (Israeli) as myself knows that George Jones did this before Sir J. Chesnut was born. But when it comes to who does it better we have a rhyming joke which I can't get to rhyme in English but it says"

"On taste and smell prefferences there is no room for arguement. So if its Chesnut,George Possum Jones or Elvis Costello and some great women singers who pulled it off its a no brainer. The best artist is the one YOU like.

  • I'm totally loyal to the Elvis Costello version of this song, but Adam's interpretation has more feeling... I can see the story unfolding as he sings. HEartbreaking.
