Alabama Archaeological Society excavation at the Chastain Site in Clarke County Alabama. This site was occupied in the Early Paleoindian (Clovis) period around 12,000 years ago. It was also occupied in the Middle Archaic (7,000 years ago) Late Woodland (1100 to 900 years ago), and was an important salt making site for the Confederacy during the Civil War. http://www.alabamaarchaeology.org/
