  • It's not surprising that you're reminded of other music. The score for this ballet is a patchwork of at least 50 popular french arias (in the 1700s). There's no composer for the original score. This version is by Sir Frederick Ashton. He wasn't a fan of the original music, so had John Lanchbery revise it. They used the original score as sort of a foundation, but overall I think they found it too simplistic. I can't remember the exact reason.

...maybe I did study too much ballet history : )

  • I'd forgotten how technically difficult Ashton's choreography for Fille was! And Carlos and Sarah handle it with typical aplomb and ease.

  • Beautiful! :)

  • That moment where she's in attitude, holding the ribbons over her head, while the other dancers run in a circle around her, making her slowly turn -- is absolutely TERRIFYING for a ballerina, because she has to do it unsupported -- but Sarah makes it look like it's a breeze. A breathtaking moment.

  • The very first time I saw her at a Boston Ballet summer extensive in 1999 I knew she would be GREAT for the Royal ballet and now she is!

  • Thanks so much for posting this because we soooooo need more Sarah here on YouTube!

  • sarah looks so weightless and beautiful! I love her style so much!

  • very pretty :)

  • I wrote an article on wikipedia about this ballet - this pas de deux is fashioned from airs from Donizetti's "Elixir", but the rest of the score is based on Herold's 1828 revision of the original pastiche of 1789.

  • Fascinating! Thank you very much for the information.

  • 4:07-4:16 is amazing. I keep going back to rewatch it : )
