Homeless MAT-ters is a mission group at First United Methodist Church of Grapevine, Texas that takes your recycled plastic grocery bags and crochets them into mats that the homeless can sleep on.
These mats are liked by the homeless because they are easy to wash, they are a deterrent for rodents and bugs and they give them just a little padding between themselves and the ground. We also make a handle so that they are easy to carry around with them.
We have people who cut and loop the plastic strips together to make what we now call plarn. We also have people who only crochet after the plarn is created. We have some who like to do all the steps themselves. This is a great project for anyone with limited mobility as it is something that can be done with little effort from the comforts of your own home. It is also free and cost nothing but time!
The completed mats are taken to our SLAB ministry which distributes them to the homeless.
