Between WWII and the mid-1950s, popular culture was invented in the pulpy, boldly illustrated pages of comic books. In "The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America," author David Hajdu vividly evokes the history of comics. Hajdu visited Kalamazoo Public Library on June 4, 2009, for a book signing and discussion of his works. www.kpl.gov/authors
Aside from the effects that the code did, on comics for decades afterwards, the war on comics was most felt well into the 1970s, by those who read them. I know at least two fans who quit and gave away their collections, because they had become to "mature" for them, and seen themselves as superior to those who still read them.To be fair, comic fans were greatly denigrated and mocked. One wonders how many did just that. As many whos moms threw out their books?Im sure of that.
