This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the various consoles I own.

This is played on a PS2 with texture smoothing on.

Wild 9 apparently did get a decent amount of attention at first. I believe it was initially supposed to be a 2D sidescroller, but was later changed into a 2.5D sidescroller. It initially would have gotten said attention, because it was made by Shiny, and was going to be their next high profile game after Earthworm Jim.

However, delay after delay pushed this game back in gamer's memories, so that by the time it finally did make it out, it didn't get much attention from the general gaming masses.

The entire design of the game revolves around Wex's, as someone put it, energy lasso called "The Rig" you use it to pick up enemies, objects, and to swing off of at select points. It's an interesting take in the genre.

Another interesting take is the focus on torturing your enemies. You can use The Rig to do all sorts of nasty things to your enemies in the game like throwing them in meat grinders, of spinning propeller blades. Their cries of pain are a joy to hear.

The game also throws in some freefalling, and jetbike/beast riding scenes to break of the platformer elements.

The music is courtesy of the man himself, Tommy Tallarico, so the tunes are great. You can even put the game disk into a CD player and play them (just don't play track number 1, because that's the computer data and it makes an awful sound).

The bigggest complaint that can be waged about the game is that it's not an easy game. It will definitely challenge you. Also, the controls while swinging with The Rig are not the best either.

Overall, Wild 9 is a fun, well designed 2.5D platformer that will challenge you. If you're still interested in the PS1, then check this game out. It has that classic Shiny feel to it.

Wild 9 is only available on the PS1, and with the fact that Shiny is no more, I doubt it will be coming to the PlayStation store for download.

  • I was never good at this game, it was thus frustrating. Harder than nowadays PC games :/

  • This game was awsome! The style reminds me of many things including Invader Zim, Earthworm Jim, Dragon Hunters and MDK (and yes I know Shiny made that too). Very satisfying level of challenge and hilarious to boot.

  • I love this fucking game, I was playing it when I was 5

  • one of my favorite games from my childhood. i found this on one of the demos from pizza hut. remember those? yeah i love this game and it should be put on psn. I used to think the electric thing was coming from his armpit lmbo!

  • @LittleBoxXx

How exactly does 2D gameplay automatically make a game "casual"?

  • @bitdinver errr, we have, and thats why videogaming today sucks, cause if this stupid 2D games. I want to buy a JRPG for PS3 and there is none, but if i want a fucking casual game, oh boy, i have plenty to choose.

  • @Monkeydood94 There are ways to do that... just saying. I've done with several of my PS1 games! :)
