Blue in Green: Her

Artist Statement: Blue in Green: Her and Him

The audio behind these videos is called Blue in Green written and arranged by Miles Davis and Bill Evans from Miles Davis Kind of Blue album. Kind of Blue featured Mr. Davis sextet with pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian Cannonball Adderly, drummer Jimmy Cobb, and bassist Paul Chambers. The best selling Jazz album of all time, Kind of Blue is considered a standard in music, any genre. Blue in Green is my favorite cut from the album. The way in which the trumpet and the saxophones respond in their solos to the improvised chords of the piano is moving in a way that is unfamiliar to many people if theyve never heard this song. My video installation Blue in Green: Her and Him is an artistic interpretation of the song. Someone could videotape pigs rolling in mud and the image would be beautiful behind this cut; but I wanted to convey a vision that I always saw every time I heard this track. The title itself calls for something visual, something to be pondered. Technically and formally I attempted to create a jazz narrative through video. The superimpositions, long, personal, close ups, that expose the intricacies of the subjects face are jazz. The first truly American musical art form, jazz was created through style and improvisation. To create a jazz art video, which may encompass that same tenacity, vigor, and bravado that jazz innately has is an arduous task and I do not believe Im quite there yet. What I do believe is that this is the first step in attempting to visually recreate a masterpiece, a classic. No longer is Mr. Davis with us, no longer can we get these men in to a room and watch them woo us with their superhuman ability to play an instrument. Music, like any aspect of culture, must appeal to the senses. This is for your ears and your eyes.
