Look, I am sorry for ranting like that. But it just struck me how little of the great polyrhythmic stuff from the original these guys managed to include.. And to me, that's the essence of this tune. I don't mean to sound elitist, and it's not about being a scholar or not, it's about understanding what you choose to play. Play a classical piece without any finesse at all, and you're going to get pounded on. But hey, they just play it like they hear it, and that's allright - nothing wrong in that.
your constructive criticism is most welcome, mr. bad. since it's obvious that you are the foremost scholar in the study of this tune, and apparently of all african music as well, the band should be flattered you would take the time to offer your insights! i'd love to hear your rendition, as it's certain to be so much more magically african, and i'll bet it's also a lot more like the sky, which these folks have failed to notice is also mentioned in the song title.
This is a ridiculous interpretation of the original. In terms of rhythm, these guys completely missed the boat, because they play it like any other stupid traditional 6/8 jazz piece. It's obvious that the title "African Skies" refers to the african traditional 3 against 4 polyrhythmic pulse(s).. Which are always present in the original track somehow - that's the beauty of it. It gives you the multidimensional magic of 3 against 4.. In this version, you don't get that, because they don't get it..
