Dan Grossman has used MOOCs in his courses at the University of Washington, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. He shared his experiences from the past year, focusing on his view as an instructor trying to reach a broad audience with a challenging elite university course, during an ATLAS Speaker Series presentation on Sept. 9, 2013. Grossman argued that MOOCs are impactful, an enormous amount of work, superior to textbooks in almost every way, yet superior to conventional university courses in fewer ways.

Grossman received his Ph.D. at Cornell University and did his undergraduate studies at Rice University. His research interests lie in the area of programming languages, ranging from theory to design to implementation, with a focus on improving software quality. He has taught a popular MOOC (massive open online course) on undergraduate topics in programming languages and functional programming.

The ATLAS Speaker Series, which is made possible by a generous donation by Idit Harel Caperton and Anat Harel, hosts distinguished visitors from academia, industry and the arts as part of the ATLAS Institute's mission to explore information and communication technologies and their effect on society.
