Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Nazis. A complex of camps, Auschwitz included a concentration, extermination, and forced-labor camp. It was located 37 miles west of Krakow (Cracow), near the prewar German-Polish border.

It is estimated that at minimum 1.3 million people were deported to Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945; of these, at least 1.1 million were murdered.

In this film from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, historians and survivors discuss the significance of Auschwitz. To learn more about Auschwitz, visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum at http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?lang=en&ModuleId=10005189.

  • My name is Dane Beem. I am a 13 year old Jewish American. My grandfathers cousins died at this camp. There names are Eva Beem and Abraham Beem. I am in tears, because I look at pictures of them, I look into there faces. They were 7 when they died, they were such cute kids. God be with you all.

    Never Again

    Never Forget

  • Majdanek was also captured intact. The reason for Auschwitz being known I think is more because of the amount of survivors and witnesses. Camps such as Chelmno nad Nerem, Sobibór, Treblinka and Bełżec had very few survivors and the witnesses were in Poland where no-one bothered to talk to them until recently.

  • i live 10 minutes away from Auswitz camp in Poland, but i have never went or seen it.

  • The Future may always Denied something like these magnitude ever happened. it is a Lost Information or Education gap. I give a lot of credit to people that take the camera and pictures into the camp to record it. the NAZI nearly deny it ever happen.
