In the late 1960's, following the successful lead of its sister station WFIL in Philadelphia, the FM station, WFIL-FM began playing more popular music. The FM station naturally concentrated on the lighter popular hits of the day and branded itself POPULAR 102. Songs by the Mamas and the Papas, Neil Diamond, Dionne Warwick, Spanky & Our Gang, The Classics IV, The Vogues, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 were all staples of the format. Instrumentals mixed with vocals, the DJ announcements were recorded ahead of time, there were news headlines once an hour, and the station had the classiest jingles you ever heard on the radio from the great PAMS. Dave Klahr was the program director behind it all who later went on to launch WMGK and the "Magic" format.
This is a typical jingle heard in between the records played
@Superbook4Eva - I would say that's a fair assessment. Popular 102/WFIL-FM was not a traditional MOR station since it was on FM; the DJ's were pre-recorded; and it was more background and heavily formatted than a traditional MOR. WIP on the AM band was the big MOR station in Philly, with WPEN struggling behind them.

Neat jingle. So was Popular 102 sort of the first "adult contemporary" station in Philly (as opposed to traditional "MOR")?

@stevations I do have some airchecks. I just need to dig them out.
