Do you realise that 10 to 15 percent of all import containers release a dangerous amount of hazardous gas or vapours when they are opened?
Some gases are added deliberately as a means of pest control during voyage (fumigation). But in most cases gas emits from the cargo or the packaging. Opening such a container is comparable to playing Russian roulette.
The health risks for workers are substantial; in Germany and the Netherlands alone, several cases of work disability are known in relation to the opening of containers. In the past year, similar incidents have been documented in Belgium. Medical researchers say this is just the tip of the iceberg.
It is impossible to ignore this problem any longer: that is why we established the TGAV platform. Unions, importers, the logistics sector, the trade press and experts in gases and occupational health are contributing to this platform. The aim is to find solutions that are low-cost, efficient and safe. We need other methods of production and new ways of pest control. This won't happen overnight. What we can do in the meantime, is generate awareness. What's more, TGAV's efforts support the realization of a standard international protocol. www.tgav.info
