"Nurse Rowland?" Hazel called as spyed the nurse walking down the corridoor towards the nurses station.
"Just my luck." The Brunette woman, in her early thirties sighed as she rearranged her features into a warm smile and spun around. "Ah, yes Hazel."
"I was wondering if I could possibly talk to you for a minute? It's about Joseph."
The nurse nodded and gestured towards a row of chairs along the corridor.
"Well, my first question is obviously how is he... in medical terms."
"Well, Hazel. In the most technical termination possible, he's doing fine, actually, he's recovering quite well, considering he had 'People Mover' cut into his waist when he arrived."
"Oh thank goodness, that he's doing well, I mean, not that he had people mover cut into him, did it actually say people mover or was it just like the outline or what?" Hazel took a deep breath and looked back up at the nurse who had raised her eyebrows in amazement, how could anyone talk that fast?
"Was, uh, was there anything else?" Nurse Rowland urged, she'd been working for almost eleven hours and she really needed her coffee fix now.
"Yeah, uh. When can he go home?"
"Well, we're moving him out of the ICU tomorrow but we do need him to make a full recovery before he can go home. Nurse Rowland registered the all too familiar look on Hazels face. The look of confusion, but the haunting question of "When will that be?" Nurse Rowland took a deep breath and answered the unasked but everdwindling question. "It's up to him when he recovers. He's fighting now, but he needs to keep fighting. He's not out of the woods yet. Between the broken ribs, collapsed lung, fractured skull and huge hole in the side of his head, he's quite fortunate to be alive."
Hazels eyes filled up with tears and she walked towards Joes hospital room. Nurse Rowland didn't think she came across as hostile, but maybe she did. The thing that stung Hazel the most was that she blamed herself for every second of pain, every second of stress, suffering and aggrivation. Hazel blamed only herself.
She finally ended the short walk to Joes hospital room door to find Nick and Kevin playing some card game by the window and Joe resting. She lightly knocked on the doorframe and cleared her throat. Nick and Kevin nodded. The silently followed her out of the hospital doors and into the park across the road. Nobody said a word until they were all seated looking over the lake. Hazel thought it morbid, even sinister that on such a beautiful day there could be such heartache, such suffering, like the sunshine, and the songbirds tune were mocking them relentlessly because they had happinness. The rest of the world somewhat oblivious to how anyone felt. Out of sight. Out of mind.
"Hazel, what is it?" Kevin asked grabbing both of Hazels hands reassuringly. Hazel explained the whole situation to the boys. When she finished her speech and looked up Kevin and Nick we're both teary eyed.
"Wow." Nick said.
"Wow." Kevin agreed.
"Look, Nick, I-" Hazel started, but she had nothing more to say. Words couldn't fix this, no matter how hard she tried.
"Look Hazel. I can't deal with all this okay? I'm sorry, but, I've just, I'm going back to Joes room in case he wakes up. Don't either of you come back up until you've sorted things out, you're more dramatic than the OC, meets Launa beach plus the Hills. We're all sick of it. Especially Joe." Kevin said as he got up to leave. Hazel and Nick watched him walk away in silence.
"So..." Nick said slowly.
"So... What's with the third degree?" Hazel plunged into it. She wasn't going to just sit around confused about all of it anymore.
"What's with the what?"
"You're happy at lunches, you're nice, you talk to me, you laugh and Joke, but then for the last I don't know how long you've been completely screwing people around, me especially, you're confusing me Nick, and I don't like it." Hazel
