Good observation. Chilton's performances have always been more about emotion than details. So many musicians I know can't enjoy anything live unless it sounds like a Steely Dan studio recording. A live Chilton/Big Star show is more like a garage band jamming on some of the greatest pop tunes ever written!
I get the impression they simply don't rehearse. I've seen them live twice, and the second time (in London recently) was a bit disappointing. I have a sneaking suspicion that the other guys have to follow Chilton's attitude to preperation. He did appear to be having a whale of a time at both shows I attended, which is something at least!
thanks for your comment...I didn`t realise that was stephens himself. don`t get me wrong; I love these guys and the two big star albums 1+2 are the best power pop albums EVER (eat your heart out, eric carmen)!
however, the sound on this clip is AWFUL, the band sounds out of sync, but this being stephens, it must be the micro placing! ;-)
Jody Stephens is one of the best drummers I've ever heard, he comes up with the fill at the end of the guitar solo which is the greatest drumming moment ever. On the Radio City version.
This clip doesn't do it justice. I was at this show, and it was sounded far better than this clip implies. Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow from the Posies are playing on this, and they'er as good as it gets live. Brilliant song.
RIP Alex Chilton

...sounds better on the record - and the drummer is awful; at least as far as can be made out here...
