Rachel Maddow completely distorts the reality of social security. Not once have I heard her mention the looming baby boomer retirements (pig in the python). This will drastically increase payouts from the trust fund, and diminish payroll tax contributions. And she insists everything is fine and dandy. Sorry Rachel, I'm a realist, and I wish you give a more balanced account of the situation and stress the need to fix it so it's around when I retire. Thanks...

@MrATLACATL Factually untrue. The largest two gov't expenditures of our tax dollars are Medicare (#1) and Social Security (#2). (#3 is interest on the nation debt & #4 is military spending). Over the years Congress has borrowed from what was supposed to be the social security trust fund. Unless Social Security is fixed, it will go broke.

Defense spending: 18.74%

vs.

Social security: 19.63%, (I am pretty sure that 19.63 is greater than 18.74)

Welfare, unemployment: 16.13%, Medicare: 12.79%, Medicaid: 8.19%

Or

18.74% vs. 56.74%

@twin2jerry Medicare IS paid for with the payroll tax. Your Social Security, Medicare and SSI deductions do not go into an account with your name on it. They all go into a big pot. 401Ks and IRAs are not funded in any way similar. You are an idiot.

@twin2jerry And you said that I didn’t know what SSA stood for. YOU DON’T GET AN “SSA” CHECK! ONLY PEOPLE WHO WORK AT THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION GET AN “SSA” CHECK! Stolen? Really? Or did you owe them money and have to give it to them? Galveston, TX is the only local government that doesn’t participate in Social Security and they retire with more money than otherwise.

@MrSteveParr Now that I am retired, my SSA & Medicare is my only income aside from $129.00 I get from LA County retirement. If the County had not dropped out of SSA I would be in a much better situation now. If I had not gone back to work, after I retired from the County, I would have lost my SSA too.

You can call Medicare government healthcare if you wish, but it is not paid for with tax dollars. We pay for Medicare & SSA the same way we pay IRA's, 401KK's, & Insurance companies for healthcare. The only difference is with SSA & Medicare, 100% of our payments are put into the fund. With IRA's, 401K's, & Ins. Co. there are no guarentees that any of our benefits will be there when we need them. I know, I had an IRA that was stolen by an ins company
